STRAVINSKY Apollo (version for string orchestra)
Colin Currie premiered Austrian composer’s Kurt Schwertsik’s witty and mesmerising Marimba Concerto in London in February 2009. Dazzling mallet work and effervescent energy drive an attractive work which was received with great enthusiasm by the audience at its premiere. Stravinsky’s ballet Apollo was commissioned in 1927 for a music festival at the Library of Congress. Taking the leader of the Muses as his subject matter the work achieved popularity in Europe when Stravinsky collaborated for the first time with choreographer George Ballanchine. Stravinsky made major revisions in the 1940s; the version in this programme is for string orchestra.
The concert finishes at approximately 9pm
