Summer School at Lakeside

Summer School at Lakeside takes place in July and August of each year and offers participants the opportunity to work with
professional artists involved in Visual Art, Theatre, Dance, Writing and Music. No previous experience is required, just lots of enthusiasm.

 

 

SUMMER SCHOOLS 2011

                                             

OUTDOORS INDOORS

MONDAY 1 - FRIDAY 5 AUGUST 10AM - 3.30PM
PERFORMING ARTS WORKSHOP SPACE & VISUAL ARTS WORKSHOP SPACE
8 - 12 YRS, £75

Press your imagination buttons and go into creative overdrive to re-create the weirdly wonderful creatures and plants inhabiting the wilder corners of the natural landscape at Lakeside, as well as a few mystical creatures not usually spotted by the everyday visitor. With artist Rosny Hayward you'll be using large scale drawings, photography and natural materials to create an incredible and fantastical wildlife installation for family and friends to enjoy. 5 days of imaginative art for young people who just can’t get enough!

                                      
  
 
 
 
 
 

THE SOCIAL NETWORK

You don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies.’ A week-long summer school using theatre to explore the phenomenon of Facebook and social networking. Taking the recent film The Social Network as a starting point, participants will create an original play based on their experiences and ideas about social networking: relationships, friendships, rejection, the possibilities are endless.

Come along and make a play in a week. Whether you're interested in writing, performing or theatre design, there's something for anyone interested in being creative, either on or behind the scenes. Fee Fi Fo Fum!! How did the Lilliputians feel when they came across Gulliver on the seashore? The Borrowers on their adventures with the ‘human beans’? Jack as he climbed the beanstalk and arrived at the giant’s castle? This is a Lakeside sell-out every year and it just keeps on getting more and more spectacular too! Each year there are 15 places for performers and 5 places for theatre designers to work with professional artists on a weeklong intensive project to create a fun and exciting show in just a week! Vina Ladwa is the inspirational Artistic Director of Manushi Dance Company and she lead these Kathak dance sessions for a wide range of ages, from as young as 3 years. Participants were able to develop new skills in Indian classical dance as a complete beginner or an experienced Kathak Dancer. The intermediate and advance sessions were accompanied by a tabla player.

LUNAR INVENTIONS

  To mark the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing, you can take an imaginary lunar trip with our artist and create out-of-this-world sculptures. Using all manner of materials your invention will be displayed in the Visitors Centre alongside the Earth-Moon-Earth exhibition.

Ever wanted to try your hand at acting, directing or theatre design?

Immerse yourself for a whole week in the exciting world of theatre; working directly with professional theatre practitioners to form a theatre company and produce a dynamic new performance to premiere on Lakeside’s main stage at the end of the week - involving a giant climbing frame!

 

 

CARNIVAL OF CELEBRATION

MONDAY 10 - FRIDAY 14 AUGUST 10AM - 4PM
11+ YEARS

  A Musical Summer School open to all, no experience needed, just enthusiasm!

Journey with us from Havana to Brazil and everything in between! 

Mambo and rumba your way through the week by experimenting with hot Cuban sounds, find your voice singing breathtaking melodies from Africa and make some noise learning Japanese taiko drumming.

Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the carnival during a spectacular finale with costumes and instruments made during the week.
